Diversity & Inclusion

By Bobby Gould, CMutual, Director of Sales (UK)

In 2016, I was lucky enough to spend time with the Director for Diversity and Inclusion at Biogen Ltd.

Biogen is a neuroscience and biotechnology company that is at the forefront of the race to defeat neurological disease. Quite a different sector from Credit Unions!

However, as an organisation, they had recognised that innovation and business performance had close correlations with how diverse and inclusive their global workforce is, and to that end had sought to become recognised as global leaders in Diversity & Inclusion strategy and execution.

They were one of the earliest companies to elevate diversity & inclusion responsibilities up to the senior executive level.

They developed a strategic approach (including allocating budget expenditure) to drive diversity and inclusion initiatives. In addition, they set stretching targets and challenged their entire workforce to become actively involved in growing just how inclusive a place to work Biogen is.

At around the same time, Filene Research Institute launched its Centres of Excellence initiative -partnering with leading US universities to deliver market-leading research into all aspects affecting Credit Unions.

I was keen to enable access to their Credit Union research and insights for Credit Unions in the UK and Ireland.

Four years on, and these separate initiatives have come together;

1. In January 2020, Filene created their Center of Excellence for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, led by Dr. Quinetta Roberson of Villanova University.

2. Following on from my learning experience with Biogen Ltd, I am delighted to be working with the ABCUL Inclusivity Group to make recommendations to the ABCUL Board and ensure that the importance of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is reflected in the development, recruitment, and activities of the ABCUL Board.
